Helpful Hints

Here are some practical steps when you approach a dream.

  1. Write down your dream as soon as you have it or record it in a journal or record it in a voice memo.
  2. If there is a question if the dream is from God put it on a shelf and if God keeps bringing it back to your mind then it is probably from Him.
  3. Sometimes dreams comes in “scenes” when “scenes” change in a dream, they may or may not be related to each other.  Ask Holy Spirit if it is a different chapter of the same dream, or if they are two separate dreams.
  4. (Here is a crazy one) If you ever see yourself inside your own dream (for example: a younger version of you)  go and ask yourself “What are you here to tell me?”
  5. Flip the dream into a vision and visualize yourself in the dream. Ask where Jesus is in the dream.  He is always with us even in our dreams.  When you see Jesus there begin to ask Him some questions about the meaning of the dream.  Ask specific questions:  “Why am I leaving out the back door?”  “Why I the sky grey?”  etc.  Believe by faith that He will answer you!  You are asking for wisdom according to James 1:5.
  6. Searching out the meaning of the dream ask Holy Spirit these questions:

a.       Is the dream literal or figurative?
b.      Is the dream positive or negative?
c.       Pay attention to colors or numbers.
d.      Use the dream interpretation app for looking up symbols in the dream.
e.      What is the reason for the dream?  Is God trying to show you a stronghold in your mind? Is there someone to forgive?  Is Holy Spirit guiding your steps?  Is it a warning to intercede for someone?  Is God bringing you correction?  Is He showing you the future?
f.        If you are having trouble deciding who the dream is about…One way to test the dream is about is to ask the question, if a person wasn’t in the dream would the story of the dream fall apart.  If it would fall apart the subject of the dream is probably about that person.  If the story of the dream would not fall apart without them that person is probably not significant.

There is significance in some of the dream symbolism. But do not rely completely on the symbols.  Be flexible in what the Holy Spirit wants to show you.  Just because you dreamed about a specific person doesn’t mean that dream is about them.  The significance could be about the position that they hold or the meaning of their name.  Place more emphasis on your relationship with Holy Spirit and the fact that He knows all about you and your history than on dream symbols.
